Over the years, I have worked as a writer, journalist, author, and editor, and consultant for fifteen years. I love to tell stories, which was the common thread linking together my work as a researcher, communications professional, journalist, think tanker, military intelligence analyst, and social media personality – stories help us make sense of the world and learn how to better thrive within it. I thrive on explaining the world around us — in all its complicated, wonderful, messy, beautiful glory.

For nearly a decade, I have worked with organizations to expand their influence and grow their audiences – mostly with non-profits, and governments, but also with private sector organizations as well. From developing stakeholder engagement to building a community of interest, from developing a long-term content strategy to kicking public and media relations into overdrive, I help organizations explain their mission and grow.

I also remain a writer at heart – you can click on the links above to see what I’m up to.

I got my start working in national security, where I used to analyze intelligence for the U.S. military. I also have spent time working as a management consultant for the intelligence community, and for Fortune 500 companies. In addition to several years spent as a journalist in Washington, DC, I also refined my focus on helping non-profits build their mission and expand their audiences in a strategic and deliberate way.

I wrote a book in 2010, Afghanistan Journal: Selections from Registan.net. You can purchase it here.

In case you were wondering: some years ago I dramatically scaled back my social media presence. There were a number of reasons for this, but the primary one was it had become a distraction from my work advancing organizations, and I decided to focus on that. While I remain on social media platforms, my personal brand on there is not my primary focus nor is it where I spent much energy – instead, I devote that attention toward helping others be better. I am also steadily building my data analysis skills – eventually, I will feel comfortable enough to post code samples! But that day is not today.

Anyhoo, if you’re interested in my past as a public intellectual you can find hours upon hours of my media appearances and public speeches on Youtube. In addition, I’m up on About.me, as well as LinkedIn and Academia.edu.
