My latest piece for Beacon is about how the shut down is only the latest crisis of legitimacy for the federal government.

What the GOP is saying through its shutdown gambit is that it has decided to reject the system of American government. When the politics don’t break their way — and when they lose a Presidential election based on it — they do not abide by the results. Instead, they try to smash the system and harm hundreds of thousands of people in the process.

But the rejection of America’s political system is not limited to the Right’s opposition to healthcare. Many on the Left in America reject it just as strongly when it comes to national security.
